Types of group rides

  • No Drop - Pace is only as fast as the slowest rider in the group.

  • Drop - Pre-determined pace set by ride leader/organizer, may have regrouping after climbs.

  • Sprint or Hill Training - Typically repeats on a single circuit (such as Mystic Lakes or a set of hills), meaning riders of different levels may attend and ride at their own pace without fear of losing the group

  • Social - leisurely pace with stop(s)

Ride times/routes/locations/speeds are typically sent to the WhatsApp group or HCC mailing list!
Join and stay in the loop.

There are several important things to keep in mind on the ride. You are representing Harvard Cycling and Harvard University to the community (particularly if you are wearing Harvard kit), so please be courteous and follow the rules and guidelines listed.

  • Helmets are required. No exceptions.

  • Your bicycle must be equipped with with a mechanical brake on the front wheel and either a mechanical brake or fixed drivetrain on the rear wheel.

  • No earbuds (even if they’re not in use).

  • Aerobar extensions (aka "aerobars," "TT bars," or "triathlon bars") may NOT be used during the ride (you may still ride with them attached to your bike). Wonder why? See this video to understand the risks.

  • On “no drop” rides, nobody gets left behind. We ride as slow as the slowest rider. If you are unable to keep up and a gap has opened ahead of you, don’t be shy, yell “GAP.” When riders hear that “gap” has been called, they must slow down and pass the word forward.

  • We stop for flats and mechanicals. Riders are expected to have the necessary equipment (spare tube, patch kit, tire levers, and pump/CO2) to change a tube and be able to do so within a few minutes.

    • Not confident in your tire-changing skills? We’ll hold clinics on how to solve mechanical issues throughout the semester!

  • Riders at the front of the group are responsible for keeping the ride smooth and safe. These riders should be familiar with the route and keep the pace steady.

  • Ride no wider than two abreast, and to the right of the double yellow line. In certain areas where it may be safer to ride single file, this will be at the discretion of the ride leader; if the leader raises their arm with one (1) finger extended, the group must merge to single file.

  • Please be courteous and aware of your surroundings at any stops. Do not block sidewalks, driveways, and be mindful of pedestrians.

  • COVID-19 is still a public health issue and should be treated as such. Riders should not join, and will not be allowed to remain on, club rides if sick or symptomatic (with cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever of 100.4° F or above, chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, or other COVID symptoms). Sick or symptomatic riders are encouraged to self-test for COVID-19 (or seek a PCR test), and follow guidelines for self-isolation prior to returning to group rides.

Adapted from XXX Racing ride guidelines - thanks, guys!

See you on the road!
